nothing's standing in my way

“I'm in the race

But I've already won

And getting there can

Be half the fun

So don't stop me

Till I'm good and done,

Don't you try to rain on my

Perfect day”

How often do we wake up thinking, “today is going to be a perfect day?”

Maybe it was easy when we're on vacation or celebrating or on our honeymoon (like this perfect day in Split!).

But I know our default is not that. Our mind immediately jumps to “I’m so tired” or the list of to dos we have to accomplish that day. We’ve already jumped into the fray of demands, without thinking about how we want it to go.

But what if we started with “today is going to be a perfect day?” It changes everything.

It makes us go into each item on our to do list, each activity, with a different mentality. Instead of rushing and thinking “how can I get this done as quickly as possible,” we’re already looking for the positive. We’re already expecting today to be a “perfect” day - and by this I don’t mean it has to actually be perfect. I don’t have to be afraid to fail. And if you’ve been following me for long you know, I don’t believe in chasing perfection. But for our purposes today and this song (which I always associate with Elle Woods), a perfect day just means “nothing’s standing in my way.”

We have the confidence that we can tackle whatever comes our way. We see fun in getting there, wherever there might be. We don’t let the little things get us down. We jump back up when we fall down.

When we think of our day this way, we’re more likely to feel like we’ve already won. That our tasks and troubles are there for our benefit. That even if something doesn’t go well, we can learn something from it.

So who’s deciding to have a perfect day with me today?
