should you leave your job during a recession?

Is it smart to leave your job with a potential recession coming up?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m so glad you asked. Great question.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is what I know - the company you work for will always do what’s right for them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Recession or no recession.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I was let go two weeks before my wedding. Two weeks. No recession. And I had just given an amazing presentation. My boss even told me so.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But the company was doing poorly so they let go all of their remote workers. And they didn’t have to pay out my vacation days that I had saved up for two years to go on my honeymoon because it was part of my remote contract. It was super sh*tty.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But it reminded me that companies will always look after themselves. No matter what. No matter how long you’ve been there or what’s going on in your life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So that means you as the employee are in charge of looking after yourself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And if you’re not happy where you are, I always advocate for either finding the ways to make it better or leaving.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Always. No matter what is going on in the economy or what’s going on in your team.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve helped clients get new jobs in the heat of the pandemic when it seemed like no one was hiring.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s worth it for your sanity.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you stay where you are, they could let you go. And if you go somewhere else, they could let you go. Unfortunately we can’t escape that.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But I know it’s way better to take care of yourself no matter what and know that even if the worst happens and you’re let go, you can figure it out (and I can help if you want).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Being happy at work is so important because we spend over a third of our days there.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And when you’re happy at work, it’s a lot easier to get more done and therefore do better at work than when you hate it. I find that when we’re having friction at work, it’s our body’s way of saying something needs to change.
