making stress worthwhile
Our stress doesn't just pop out of no where. Just like plants grow from roots below the surface, our stress gains power when it's fed consistently.
So how do we deal with these roots, especially when they're growing out of control, so they don't drive us batty?
Because a lot of our stress is out of our control these days. Covid stress, work stress, family stress, there's a lot going on.
And when we can't change what we're going through, we have to change how we see the problem.
This process is formally called positive reappraisal. It's all about deciding that the pain and stress we're going through right now is worth it in someway.
In other words, it's worth it to stay home day after day because it keeps us safe.
It's worth it to apply for these 3 jobs because taking the next step in our career is important to us.
It's worth it to interact our stressful boss because she means well and we believe in the work we're doing.
You see, positive reappraisal isn't about just being optimistic or seeing the silver lining. It's really about acknowledging when it's tough, but choosing to see the stress as an opportunity instead of something that will rip us apart.
So how might you practice positive reappraisal today? What's one stressor outside your control that you could choose to see as an opportunity or worth the pain?
