learning to fly
Out in our backyard, baby robbins are learning how to fly. They're unsteady, flying into everything. Their little fuzzy heads peaking out of the grass.
I startled one as I came outside and he flew straight into our fence. Pretty comical, but also - ouch!!
He hid for a bit, making sure I was safe and then furtively tried again. He wasn't going to let my presence stop him, flapping his wings at twice the rate of a normal robbin.
And it's only natural, when we are trying something new, to try twice as hard. He's putting so much effort into something that will eventually be effortless for him.
What a great reminder for life. That we just have to try. And keep trying. And flapping our wings, and eventually, even though we might run head first into a few fences, we'll eventually fly.
Maybe my favorite part of this whole thing is the parents, though. One of them is constantly nearby. Cheering the babe on with a constant, level chirp.
They'll switch off, mom and dad, but as the little one is flapping and trying, their cheerleader is always nearby.
The babe has to learn for themselves; the parent can't do it for them. Their siblings can't do it for them.
Learning to fly in life is all on us as individuals. Sure, we need those people chirping for us, but ultimately it's ours to do. We have to hit the fences, run and squawk, flap our wings too quickly. We have to hit, fall, try again. Eventually I know we'll get there. Eventually, just like the robbins, we'll fly.
So keep flapping and squawking. Keep trying because I can't wait to see you soar.
