Urgency, deadlines and procrastination just help your brain stop editing itself. That's why it feels easier to work under a deadline.

Because you don't have time to edit yourself. The perfectionism pressure flies out the window. There's no time to question yourself. You just do it and make quick decisions. It's all about getting it done asap.

That's why it's easier to do good work under a deadline - because you stop editing or judging yourself throughout the process.

The only problem with this is that often the pressure is tied to fear and shame. You're motivated by not wanting to disappoint someone or you beat yourself up for not starting sooner.

But the truth is these deadlines have served you, they've helped you crank out your work. They've helped you get it done without editing yourself. And that's made the work really good too.

So how could we allow you to stop questioning yourself and do the work without the pressure of working up against a deadline?

I think one of the easiest ways is helping your brain know that you don't have to edit yourself so much.

That your first draft is good enough. That working on it for 20 minutes instead of 2 hours is enough. That your gut instincts and decisions are good and valid.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whoever will be seeing your work probably will have edits. Most people do. But you've done the hard work of creating the first draft. That's the hardest part.

It's so easy to self-edit. It's so easy to tell yourself what you should do/say/etc. But great work comes from just doing it uninhibited. Your brilliant ideas are like this zebra head above this shop in Lisbon - amazing.
